Consuming too much alcohol for too long can be damaging to health. While alcohol does not pose a risk to health on its own, abusing can lead to liver disease and other fatal conditions. Binge drinking is drinking when bored behavior that raises blood alcohol levels to 0.08%. That usually means four or more drinks within two hours for women and five or more drinks within two hours for men.

As noted above, these distinctions are absent from the UK guidelines. The benefits of moderate drinking aren’t limited to the heart. In the Nurses’ Health Study, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and other studies, gallstones 40, 41 and type 2 diabetes 32, 42, 43 were less likely to occur in moderate drinkers than in non-drinkers. The emphasis here, as elsewhere, is on moderate drinking. Like a “standard drink,” “moderate drinking” can have several definitions.
Talk with a doctor or nurse if you’re having a hard time cutting back on your drinking. Keeping track of each drink may help you drink less overall. You can also make notes in your smartphone to keep track of your drinks.
You and your community can take steps to improve everyone’s health and quality of life. In addition, certain individuals, particularly older adults, who are planning to drive a vehicle or operate machinery—or who are participating in activities that require skill, coordination, and alertness—should avoid alcohol completely. Throughout the 10,000 or so years that humans have been drinking fermented beverages, they’ve also been arguing about their merits and demerits.
